* * * *
I’d just stepped into my house and locked the door when someone rang the doorbell. I prayed it wasn’t Mrs. Algona. While I adored my elderly neighbor, she loved to work me to death with exhausting tasks she couldn’t do herself. I didn’t mind helping her, but tonight I just wanted to soak in a bath and forget my love life truly sucked.
But I didn’t have it in me to turn her down. She had no family, no sons to come over and check on her. Her husband had died two years prior, and I knew the tasks she gave me were her way of staving off loneliness.
Putting a smile on my face that I honestly didn’t feel, I swung the door open. But Mrs. Algona wasn’t on my doorstep.
“Roland?” He’d only ever come over here with Cage. I looked past him to see if my brother was in the driveway, but all I saw was his black Charger sitting behind my sensible sedan. “Is something wrong? Is Cage all right?”
I’d just left my brother’s. If anything had happened to him…
For the first time since I’d met Roland, he looked uncertain. “Cage is fine. Do you mind if I come in?”
I stepped aside and waved him in before closing the door behind him. My heart thumped so hard it hurt my chest. I couldn’t imagine why Roland had stopped by, so I said the first thing that came to mind. “Do you want something to drink?”
“Got any whiskey?”
With a nod, I went to my liquor cabinet and grabbed the bottle of Jack Daniels. I also grabbed two glasses and set them down and poured each of us three fingers’ worth.
When I turned to take Roland the tumbler, he was standing right behind me. I nearly dropped the glass, but Roland grabbed it and took a step back.
“What brings you over here?” I hoped it was for sex but knew better. I waved to my sofa. “Do you want to have a seat?”
“How about we sit on your patio?” Without waiting for an answer, he strode away.
I scratched my head, shrugged, and followed. The sun had set, filling my backyard with darkness, but it was still warm out. I lit the torches on either side of the patio and took a seat at my glass-and-nickel–finish table.
Roland moved his chair closer to mine. My stomach fluttered as I gripped my glass tighter. What was he up to? Why the impromptu visit? All kinds of scenarios raced through my mind. Was he here to tell me to stop chasing him, that he’d always see me as Cage’s younger brother and that I was wasting my time? But I hadn’t even flirted with him tonight. Hell, I’d been proud of myself for my restraint.
Or…oh God. I’d never seen him with a date before. I had no clue if Roland was even gay. Was that why he’d shot me down every single time over the years, because he was straight?
My heart plummeted as I looked everywhere but at him.
